Why so many sequels?

So I’ve just got in from watching Independence Day: Resurgence. And you know what? It’s not actually that bad. It’s not amazing by any means. But the critics have again been way too harsh. They really shit on these films and don’t take them for what they are. And that’s fun. This film never takes itself too seriously. How can it? It’s a film about aliens wanting revenge after 20 years of waiting around, twiddling their tentacles while the human race stole their technology and has since used it to build a better world. That’s just ridiculous on all kinds of levels. But it’s fun. And that’s the main thing. I know critics have to be critics and point out all the crap stuff, but seriously, who cares? I’m not going to watch these films for realism. And it’s not like I’m going to complain and say that “aliens wouldn’t look like that”. I’m going to laugh at the clichés and dodgy acting but more importantly have fun while doing it. That’s exactly what you get with this sequel. It’s pretty much the same as the first film, except everyone is 20 years older. Although there is one key character missing, and that’s Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller. It’s a shame that Will is not it. He was originally in the script. But in the end it came down to scheduling. It was either Suicide Squad or ID2. He definitely made the right decision with Suicide Squad. It’s something different, as opposed to being involved in a sequel. Although he has done sequels before as we know. Some not very good (Men in Black 2 & 3) and some awesome (Bad Boys 2, and soon 3 & 4) He is definitely a busy guy!

What is up with sequels this year though? It seems to have gone crazy. After a quick Wiki search here are all the sequels we’ve had, and yet to have in 2016:

  • Ride Along 2
  • Kung Fu Panda 3
  • Zoolander 2
  • London has Fallen
  • Divergant: Allegiant
  • Batman vs Superman
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Barbershop: The Next Cut
  • The Huntsman: Winter’s War
  • X-Men: Apocalypse
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
  • TMNT 2
  • Now You See Me 2
  • The Conjuring 2
  • Finding Dory
  • Independence day: Resurgence
  • The Purge: Election Year
  • Ice Age: Collision Course
  • Star Trek Beyond
  • Jason Bourne
  • Mechanic : Resurrection
  • Bridget Jone’s Baby
  • Underworld: Blood Wars
  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • Ouija: Origin of Evil
  • Bad Santa 2
  • Star Wars: Rouge One

Jesus I didn’t think the bullet points were ever going to stop! In case you didn’t count them all. That’s a whopping 29 sequels just in 2016 alone. 29! I’m sorry but that’s ridiculous. No wonder why more people are putting money in to streaming sites like Netflix and TV Shows. It seems like the only films that can get made nowadays are sequels/prequels/franchises. It’s sad when there are no doubts that many awesome, original ideas are probably sitting on some director’s shelf gathering dust, never to see the light of day.  Studios nowadays don’t seem to be interested in original ideas because they don’t seem them making any money. Well it’s funny because now even major box office films are failing to secure an audience. I truly believe this is down to a smarter cinema audience not wanting the same old shit every time. These so called “movies” normally contain a tonne of CGI, plastic acting, explosions, hot girls and shitty pointless romance. Yes I’m mostly talking about Transformers here but you get my point. These big box offices aren’t all doing as well as they were 10 years ago. There’s been a lot of sleeper hits. Just take Deadpool for example. Not a big film by any means. Especially given the budget was tiny for a superhero film. But they made it work. And all that hard work and creativity paid off big time. It’s been the most talked about film this year and definitely the surprise hit no one predicted. I know it’s another superhero film, which I am getting tired of. But it was so much more than that. People were watching it who didn’t even know who Deadpool was. I’ve had to explain this to people and the look of confusion on their faces says it all. Yet just goes to show if you have a funny script and a good story then it’s got a chance.

Even though we’re drowning in sequels this year, there are some that I am looking forward to. Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher definitely being the standouts. Underworld too is another one I can’t get enough of. It’s Kate Beckinsale in a Black PVC; I mean come on, what’s not to love there? I have seen a few already on the list too. And so far the only one that was better than the first film is Conjuring 2. It was such an awesome film. Like the first, it’s already a horror classic in my eyes. This is a sequel done right. It had even more unique scares. Some that nearly made me jump in to the row in front of me. The story too, it was just so engrossing. I was hooked from start to finish. I hear they’re doing Conjuring 3. Maybe. I hope so. These are sequels I don’t mind. Just as long as they don’t keep making them. 3 is enough, plus a spinoff. I hope they don’t do a saw and end up doing trillions of them.

Anyway that’s all from me, catch you all next week!
